Luminary colour direction Book issue 31
Spring/Summer 2026 and onwards

lssue 31 celebrates over fifteen years of creating colour and dreaming up stories to inspire and rejuvenate the design industries. Luminary was dreamed up in 2008, where they handmade each book in a shed at the bottom of the garden in London.

In issue 31, Luminary are seeking 'Huetopia'. It is time to step outside the comfort of our homes and into the beautiful expanses of our chaotic world and ask, 'What makes us truly happy?' We embrace both the darkness and the light, the despair and the joy in each day; we live in an age of both real and unreal realities, truth and untruths. Huetopia is your inner universe of colour; the quality, nuance and reality of colour makes you the happiest at this moment, here and now.

“Huetopia is your own inner universe of colour, it is the quality, nuance and reality of colour that makes you the happiest in this moment, here and now.”

Anna Starmer - Luminary Issue 31 - Huetopia

What is good colour today? Is it colour extracted from plants, roots and fungi; or bio-colour, lab-grown, artificial or digital colour - or colours derived from mould, algae and bacteria? Luminary brings 60 hand dyed textile swatches and hundreds of colour inspirations to life in Issue 31 - Huetopia.

Art and invention are forever optimistic, and we look to the future and seek out colour-filled and hopeful dreams of Huetopia at every turn. Welcome to Huetopia, colour storytelling and visual inspiration for curious designers, original photography, extraordinary design thinking, global material innovators and (of-course) timeless, beautiful colour.

In the world of Huetopia we are living and designing with a deep awareness of all of our senses, exploring the relationship between scent, colour, memory, sound and materials. We are fascinated by the deeper understanding of how colours can impact our emotional wellbeing and nervous system.

Euphoria (above) occupies a realm between the physical and digital worlds, colours blend and blur the illusion between real and unreal. Transient, light reflecting, shimmering surfaces merge from artificial cool iridescent to veiled pinkish tints (almost like human skin).

Dream-like and digital imagery transforms natural tones of aqua, lime and lilac into ephemeral cosmic rays of coloured light.

Luminary extracts colours from wild foraged buddleia plants and correopsis flowers. We use photography to bring to life inspirations, discoveries and visual treasures found on our travels, from Venice to Palma de Mallorca. LVC-3038 ginger cake is a key colour and used for the cover of Issue 31.

Shadow play is a story of contrasts and opposites. Colours play with warm against cool, using fresh blue-violet shades opposite warming ginger, blood orange and terracotta. Geometric shapes and architectural details are outlined with black fig, a patchwork of tonal colours layers graphic contrasts of light to dark.

Hothouse is a collection of colours inspired by hothouse plants, orchids, passion flower, yucca and cactus. Golden hues and sunkissed positive colours are light-filled, radiant and blissful, we are in awe of the natural world.
