Colour is not just something we use, but something we experience in profound and meaningful ways.

At the heart of this edition lies a question: What does 'Colour Ecology' mean?

In this issue of Luminary Colour, we explore the future of colour and materials, focusing on the intersection of human emotional intelligence and ecological sustainability.

Colour has the power to connect, inspire, and transform; the future of design is one that embraces the full spectrum of human experience, rooted in empathy, guided by intelligence, and powered by ecological responsibility.

  1.     Constructive

Images shot on location in Switzerland. The city is not just bricks, glass and steel, it is a constructive space where colour light and form create a dialogue between humanity and the Earth. Urban inspired colours from tark night blue and pavement grey, highlighted with rich agen bronze – enduring and majestic colours for investment pieces across interior and clothing.

  1.     Edible

Colours are good enough to eat – we made blackcurrant parfait for the photo shoot. Golden tones of honey and caramel offer us a nostalgic set of joyous hues which are imbued with warmth. Glossy vintage glassware in cocktail colours of Aperol, negroni and pink champagne. Sweet and sour rhubarb jelly and raspberry mousse will delight the taste buds and invoke a life-long devotion to this palette. Colours dyed with waste food – onion skins. Materials like a patisserie, glazed, boiled, caramelised, whipped, mousse-like and frothy. "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well." Virginia Woolf

  1.     Mercurial

We are at the ebb and mercy of everything in this universe, we orbit around the sun transferring from daylight to night black; the moon gifts us the oceanic tides and all of us are partly made of stardust. Anna swam in the lake in Zurich Switzerland. Water is the life force of our planet, we celebrate and cherish raincloud grey, lagoon green and aqua haze.

  1.     Renewal

Renewal is another word for Rebirth or Rejuvenation: urging a shift towards ‘Colour Ecology’, a process that seeks to restore the balance between nature and design. Vital, fresh, courageous shoots of green emerge early in the year when least expected, colours enticed from nature yet transmuted and recalibrated by human intervention. Textiles produced from bio-invasive plants in London, symbiotic beauty products grown in a bio-lab. Photograph on page 61 by Gaia Bonanomi. Gaia's photography is a powerful tool for self-discovery and connection with others. Through her lens, she celebrates individuality, focusing on themes such as women's empowerment, diversity, cultural heritage, and our deep bond with Mother Earth.

  1.     Indulgent

Photography of a popup supper at Luminary Studio. Could the pursuit of sustainability itself be viewed as an epicurean luxury? Embracing indulgence as a conscious act, rooted in deep thinking and ecological awareness, can open the door to a new kind of luxury: creating solutions that merge pleasure with ecological responsibility. We’ve created a palette of colours worthy of Queen Cleopatra herself, including the ancient Tyrian purple. Rich, theatrical hues like iris and plum, along with antique mauve, recall a time of extravagant Venetian dinner parties.

  1.     LowTech

Future thinking materials shot in the Luminary Studio. New materiality drives a circular palette of blended softened colours that are derived from raw and undyed waste streams. Broken down, squished, shredded, and reformed into new realms of colours which resemble candy in a sweet store. Putty pink and moon mauve blend with recycled sawdust or paper pulp. Lab-grown biobased colours, ferments and moulds, offer unstable living colours that shift from translucent gooseberry to lemon puff.
